What do you get from a bunch of red, green and white fat quarters , freezer paper and a pattern??? A Christmas project!!!
This was the beginning of a challenge for me! One of the hardest parts was to select 10 fat quarters of each color....some I did not think went well together at the beginning of the project but at the end, I was happy!!
First,after tracing the pattern on the freezer paper, it was ironed on to a red, white and green fat quarter. Cutting the 10 layers at one time was a first for me...I usually only do 3-4. Then they were shuffled in stacks. I had never done a stack & wack project before, so that was new to me also.
The first ones I made were the white ones....I had taken a class at Wish Upon A Quilt (Raleigh, NC) and got 1 made the night of the class. The instructor was very good and patient. We went step by step together. I was happy with my block and when I left I hoped I would have the project finished before this Christmas!!! Well, it was several weeks before I got back to the blocks (I had to finish the 2 quilts for the Church Harvest Sale).
The red ones went along fast...I got them completed in an afternoon. There is a lot of pressing & trimming in each block.
When all the green ones were completed, then I had to find the smallest block to trim them all to the same size.
Here is a picture of the completed top. It's called
Tree's Up,Lights On. I cannot decide if I want to add a border ( I do, but do not know what I could do. I have a 4" X 22" strip off each fatquarter) I thought of adding a separator strip that would finish up as 1/2" but what color??? It is 57" X 73". I am going to machine quilt it....got to shop for the backing tomorrow. I'm open for suggestions.
I finished my Christmas Quiltalong top...now I just have to quilt it!!! It's a wallhanging, BUT it's BIG!!! I am thinking of adding a couple of borders and turning it into a throw. It's big enough to cover all of me, except my feet. I have to check out my LQS and see if it has any of the fabric. I can order it (if I locate it on the web). The black border strip really made it pop!
This is the Noel panel by Bernartex that I am using to make a wallhanging. I downloaded the pattern and purchased all the needed fabrics. So far, I have the inner borders on.
I am using my machine to buttonhole stitch around the trees, the pattern says just to fuse on but I like the look of the stitches (hard to see in the picture).
